I’m here!

I finally made it to Africa! Three flights in cramped seating and lots of waiting in between and I’m finally here. I arrived about 1:00 pm and Don and Debi picked me up and we headed for their house. The road into Arusha was newly built four lanes with a wide median. The problem is that if you wanted to go to a shop on the other side of the street, there was no way to get there without going a mile or two and make a u turn. So occasionally people would just drive in the wrong lane. So every so often we would see a car coming right at us in our lane!
We stopped at a grocery store on the way home. I was impressed that it had everything. There were wines from South Africa, all the brand name items. We stocked up and headed home. The road to their house was a dirt road full of pot holes and giant ruts. It was slow going and really bumpy. Their house is small but quite comfortable. There are three bedrooms, one has two beds. Don uses that one for his office. The power was out (not unusual) and had been all day. They have an alternate power source for the lights but not for the refrigerator. The stove is gas but the oven is electric. I unpacked and then helped Debi prepare dinner. She prepared chicken masala and I made a cabbage salad. All the vegetable are organic and full of flavor. We had fresh fruit salad for dessert. I love the tropical fruits and mangoes are in season! Pineapples are super sweet too!
My broth-in-law, Erik, came for dinner and we had a great time talking about absolutely everything. I started fading at about 1am so we said goodnight and I must have fallen asleep immediately! It had been a long day!
