The spice tour
08.11.2017
After a lovely breakfast in the rooftop restaurant, my guide showed up to take me north to a spice tour. I had a guide for the tour and we walked around this huge area. He showed me nutmeg trees and what the fruit looked like. I had never seen nutmeg on a tree. Then clove trees and how they were harvested. He also showed me cinnamon trees, vanilla, pepper, ginger root and also some fruits. I had never seen a jack fruit. They are huge! One area we stopped where a guy named butterfly climbed a coconut palm while singing and quirking! Then he cut a coconut so we could drink the milk and eat the meat. Then we walked to another area where I could buy spices which I did. Then to where I tried all the different fruits. It was great to experience these fruits. They were all good. It started to rain while we were eating coconuts so the guide got a big leaf to cover us. It was such an interesting trip!
From there we went to a butterfly farm where they engage the local people to help protect the butterflies and their environment. If they can make money without cutting down all the trees then it’s a win win.
From there we went to the National forest to see red colobus monkeys. They are only found in Zanzibar. A lady guide took me on a walk and we found a whole group of them. They are really cute. They were jumping from tree to tree and a couple of them ran right past me! I got some good pictures of them. We also walked through a mangrove forest on a wooden boardwalk. It was beautiful there.
By then I was really tired and ready to go back. The driver returned me to the hotel and I rested a while. I had dinner up on the rooftop restaurant where I watched the sunset. It was a great day!
